Australia – Present Day

Now is the time. I am taking the biggest chance of my life telling Vanessa about my feelings. We are huddle together waiting for the clock to strike midnight so we can ring in the new year together. Evan and Sienna got married today, it was beautiful, those two look so happy and I want that happiness with Vanessa. Having our families spend time with each other on this trip really sealed the deal for me, they just meshed. My parents love Vanessa. Mom would love for something more permeant to happen between us, so hopefully tonight we can start the new year off with a bang as a couple. I am nervous as fuck, we have had such a great time while being here. Vanessa has been so relaxed showing me around where she grew up, especially that hidden waterfall where we basically spent the day fucking in the sun in the middle of nowhere. Heaven, it was fucking heaven.

“Happy New Year,” everyone screams as the fireworks go off around us. I kiss Vanessa with everything that I have, hoping that by some miracle she feels the same way I do. Breaking our kiss, we turn and watch the light display.

“Vanessa, I love you,” I whisper into her ear.

“I love you too,” she answers.

I maneuver her around in my arms so that we are face to face when I explain to her what I really mean. “No, V…I love you.” I don’t think she gets what I mean, because we say that all the time to each other but it’s usually in a friendly way. Now I am meaning it in a ‘more than friends’ kind of way. “Not as the ‘best friends forever’ kind of love, more like…” I pause for a moment stumbling over my words because I am nervous as fuck. “I love you as in you’re ‘the one’ kind of way.” Vanessa laughs, she must think I am joking, she isn’t taking me seriously. “Ness?” I prompt her because she hasn’t answered me.

“What?” She responds as if I haven’t just declared my deepest feelings for her.

“You don’t have anything to say?” I question, feeling annoyed by her reaction. She is silent for a moment then reaches out and pinches me. “Ouch,” I groan, rubbing my arm. What the hell did she do that for?

“Chris… no,” she finally answers and I can see that she is freaking out and I don’t blame her because if the roles were reversed I would probably be doing the same thing.

“V, look at me,” I command, trying to get her to concentrate on me in front of her not everything else that is going on in her head. “Ness, stop freaking out and look at me,” I demand again when she refuses to meet my eyes. “No one can compare to you, Ness.” I want her to understand exactly how serious I am about her. “I tried, I tired so much to get over you but you are so far under my skin.
